Addressing the TRC Calls to Action
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) published 94 Calls to Action in 2015, covering a wide range of areas, including child welfare, education, language and culture, health, and justice.
Several of these Calls to Action resonate with the work of SevenGen Energy, given our focus on empowering Indigenous youth in the clean energy sector and our emphasis on cultural preservation, education, and economic opportunities.
Here are some of the Calls to Action that align with SevenGen Energy's initiatives:
Education: Calls to Action #62-65 focus on education for reconciliation, including developing culturally appropriate curricula, teaching Indigenous rights, treaty rights and Indigenous law, and promoting understanding and reconciliation. SevenGen Energy’s efforts to educate Indigenous youth about clean energy and sustainability align with these Calls to Action.
Youth Programs: Call to Action #66 calls for multi-year funding for community-based youth organizations to deliver programs on reconciliation. SevenGen Energy’s various programs for Indigenous youth align with this Call to Action.
Health: Calls to Action #18-24 focus on recognizing the value of Indigenous healing practices and incorporating them in the healthcare system. While SevenGen Energy’s focus is on clean energy, our emphasis on sustainable living and respect for the Earth aligns with the broader understanding of health and wellness in many Indigenous cultures.
Language and Culture: Calls to Action #13-17 emphasize the need to acknowledge and support Indigenous languages and cultures. SevenGen Energy’s commitment to Indigenous ways of knowing align with these Calls to Action.
The emphasis on Indigenous youth empowerment, knowledge sharing, professional development and collaboration aligns with the spirit of the TRC’s Calls to Action. By fostering Indigenous Leadership in the clean energy sector and highlighting the significance of Indigenous Knowledge, SevenGen Energy is contributing to the broader goals of reconciliation in Canada. These calls to action prioritize Indigenous empowerment, self-determination, and meaningful engagement in shaping the future of energy development in the country known as Canada.
