THE POWER OF KINSHIP

SEVENGEN 2022

The 2022 summit, spanning three days from September 8 to 10, united 150 Indigenous youth at Dakota Dunes in Treaty 6 Territory. It emphasized the significance of kinship in bringing communities together and sparking creative solutions for sustainable energy. The summit's purpose was to empower future Indigenous leaders, foster partnerships, and advocate for fair climate action. Empowering Indigenous youth to take the lead in Earth stewardship is crucial for the well-being of future generations.

SEVENGEN 2019

POWERING RESILIENCE

In 2019, SevenGen held its first Indigenous youth-led energy summit in Calgary and brought together 200 Indigenous youth from all Canadian provinces and territories. The event aimed to empower attendees to see energy and climate action as a way to impact their own communities and shape their future careers. The summit was organized by a team of Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth from Mount Royal University and was one of the most diverse youth programs and gatherings in Canada’s history, with every province and territory represented.

Distinguished participants of the summit included Dr. Roberta Jamieson, CEO of Indspire; Melina Laboucan-Massimo, Climate Change Fellow; David Suzuki Foundation and President of Lubicon Solar; Cheryl Trudell, Vice President of Research at Imperial; Arlene Strom, Senior Vice President and General Counsel at Suncor Energy; Corey Gray, Lead Operator at Caltech - LIGO; and Larissa Crawford, founder of Power Play by Community Power, among other influential leaders.

2019 SEVENGEN PROGRAM

The Innovation Jam is Student Energy's pinnacle event, where real-world problems are solved through interactive and innovative sessions. At SevenGen, delegates pitched twenty-eight ideas to solve real-world opportunities and challenges, drawing on diverse knowledge and experience. The Innovation Jam was SevenGen's favorite session, with many teams planning to continue developing their vision and working with cross-country teams to realize their projects.

The Innovation Jam

The SevenGen mentorship program ensured all delegates felt connected and empowered to succeed in implementing their ideas in their communities. Twenty-eight mentors worked with groups of seven delegates during the Summit, providing guidance and support. After the Summit, mentors followed up with their mentees at the three- and six-month post-summit mark. Delegates can apply to a SevenGen project fund after the mentorship program to realize their projects.
